Skin care for tattooed skin

During the tattooing process, tattoo ink is injected into the deeper layers of the skin with a needle – i.e. into the dermis. This means that for each individual stitch made with the tattoo needle, a small damage is caused to the skin, which both irritates the skin and can create infections. So it is especially important to make sure that the tattoo artist only works with sterilised equipment, otherwise you risk infection in the tattoo (which will need the same healing process as a regular wound).

Aftercare of tattoos

After you have done a tattoo, the skin is extra sensitive and then you need to take a little extra care of it. In addition, a newly made tattoo should be handled carefully afterwards so that it will heal as it should, look nice and keep its quality in the future. Below are some tips on how you can easily take care of your new tattooed skin and achieve the best possible results:

  1. Gently wash the tattoo with mild soap and lukewarm water after removing the protective plastic wrap.
  2. Let the tattoo air dry.
  3. Lubricate the tattoo with Helosan® Original, which is a mild and unscented ointment.
  4. Wash the tattoo once a day with mild soap and lukewarm water.
  5. Apply the tattoo with skin ointment five times a day until the scab is completely gone. Gradually reduce the lubrication process.

Why should a tattoo be embalmed with ointment?

At the end of the skin there is a natural layer of fat that protects against dehydration and keeps the skin soft and supple. These fats are the skin’s most important barrier against dehydration. When you tattoo your skin, they are temporarily damaged. If the skin becomes dry, healing of the tattoo takes longer and you run the risk that the skin becomes irritated and small wounds occur, which in turn can cause infections and eczema. When considering skin care products for the aftercare of a new tattoo, it is important that you choose soft and at the same time moisturising products that care for the skin. Helosan® Original is a mild and skin-friendly ointment, gentle on the skin and unscented, and that is exactly why many tattoo artists recommend Helosan® for tattooing and subsequent care. The ointment contains moisturising and emollient substances that are similar to the skin’s natural protective barrier fat and acts as a protective layer on the skin. This gives the skin time to moisturise and repair itself and become resistant to external influences such as sun, water and cold.

It is important that you pay attention to protecting your tattoo from the strong rays of the sun. Since the tattoo initially consists of many small wounds, you will probably experience itching around the tattoo at some point in the healing process. This is completely natural, but can be extremely troublesome for the individual. The best possible thing is to use Helosan® after tattooing, as Helosan® Original helps to care for the skin, deeply moisturises it and relieves any itching and irritation.

Never tear or scratch the scab that will be there while the skin heals. Always wash your hands before touching your newly made tattoo. Then you reduce the risk of infection and your tattoo will retain its beautiful appearance for longer.
